Who are Humanity Direct?
Humanity Direct was founded in 2013, inspired by deeply personal experiences. When both of the wives of our two founders needed emergency surgeries during childbirth, we were struck by how fortunate we were to have access to life-saving medical care. With immense gratitude for the healthcare that saved our loved ones, we decided to create a charity that could provide life-changing and life-saving surgeries for those who lack access to vital medical treatment.
Our work primarily focuses on Uganda, where access to healthcare is often limited. We organise outreach clinics in remote areas, connecting individuals with our team of surgeons. These clinics allow us to provide consultations, perform necessary surgeries, and cover all associated costs, including transport, hospital stays, medications, and follow-up care. Our goal is simple: to ensure that no child or family suffers needlessly from treatable conditions due to lack of access to medical care.
We’re proud to have an incredible team of professionals and volunteers supporting our mission. Our Healthcare Coordinator, Dickson Kazosi, works tirelessly to manage our activities in Uganda, while our field volunteers, Betty Nakimuli and Sylvia Nakaweesi, ensure patients are supported every step of the way. Our medical team includes highly skilled specialists like Dr. John Ssekabira, a Senior Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, and Dr. Dan Namaguzi, a Consultant Urologist, among others. Together, they perform surgeries and train local healthcare professionals, leaving a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
In 2019, we launched the “Glasses for Classes” programme, which has since tested over 20,000 eyes and provided glasses to more than 2,000 children. These glasses enable children with poor eyesight to see clearly, helping them stay in school and reach their full potential.
To date, we’ve funded over 1,000 surgeries, ranging from skin grafts to complex neurosurgeries. Each story is a testament to the transformative power of access to healthcare. For instance, Neema, a young girl bitten by a snake, received surgery that saved her leg and allowed her to walk again.
Our mission is guided by the belief that no one should die or suffer from treatable conditions. Through direct funding and transparent operations, we connect donors with specific cases, ensuring every contribution has a tangible impact. Beyond addressing immediate medical needs, we’re working to strengthen local healthcare systems, raise awareness of global healthcare inequality, and inspire a culture of giving and compassion. Together, we can make a difference.
