Cataract surgery in children

Conditions such as vitamin A deficiency, harmful traditional eye remedies, congenital rubella syndrome, and glaucoma can all lead to severe visual impairment. If left untreated, these conditions are likely to result in irreversible blindness.

Cataract surgery in children

Cataract surgery in children is often the only option for restoring sight. However, in Uganda, treatment is scarce, with just one ophthalmologist for every million people and limited medical facilities equipped to provide the necessary care.

Our Glasses for Classes programme has conducted eye tests that have identified numerous children at risk of developing cataracts. Through our surgical connections, we’ve been able to arrange cataract surgery to save their eyesight.

The World Bank has recognised cataract surgery as one of the most cost-effective interventions available in lower- and middle-income countries. Since cataracts have an immediate effect on vision, patients are likely to seek help early, improving the chances of a successful outcome. Cataract surgery in children is a straightforward procedure, with low post-operative costs and swift recovery times, offering a life-changing solution for those affected.

Donate today and change the life of not just a Ugandan child, but of their family and local community too.
