What Are the Costliest Surgical Procedures to Fund?

At Humanity Direct, we strive to deliver life changing surgery to children in need, so they can grow up healthy and free from preventable medical conditions. While many operations are relatively cheap compared to high income country healthcare, some require more complex treatment and therefore more expensive to fund.

Here are the most expensive surgeries we fund and why they are so important.

1. Orthopaedic Surgery for Severe Limb Deformities

Children born with conditions like clubfoot, bowed legs or untreated fractures need complex surgical intervention to move again. These surgical procedures can involve multiple surgeries, physio and post op care, so are more expensive. But successful treatment prevents lifelong disability and allows children to walk independently.

2. Major Reconstructive Surgery After Burns

Severe burns can cause contractures where scar tissue tightens and restricts movement. Burn contracture release surgical procedures is often extensive, requiring skin grafts, multiple procedures and rehab. While costly, these surgeries allow children to use their limbs again, improving their independence and quality of life.

3. Neurosurgery for Congenital Conditions

Some children are born with hydrocephalus, where fluid builds up in the brain or spinal abnormalities that require urgent surgery. These procedures often involve shunts or corrective spinal surgery, both of which require specialist neurosurgeons and post op monitoring, so are more expensive to fund.

4. Complex Hernia Repair and Bowel Surgery

While simple hernia repairs are one of our most common surgical procedure, complex cases involving bowel obstructions or strangulated hernias require longer hospital stays, advanced surgical techniques and more post op care. Early intervention is critical as these can be life threatening without treatment.

5. Eye Surgery for Severe Vision Impairment

Some children need more advanced eye surgery beyond cataract removal, like treatment for severe strabismus (eye misalignment), retinal conditions or corneal transplants. These surgical procedures are more expensive due to specialist equipment and expertise needed to restore sight.

Why Your Donations MatterThese surgeries are a fraction of the cost of what they would be in high income countries but completely change lives. By funding an operation you ensure a child gets medical care they would otherwise never receive.
