What types of medical conditions are commonly addressed through Humanity Direct’s interventions?

Humanity Direct funds surgeries for a wide range of medical conditions, focusing on high impact, low cost operations.

The conditions vary but all have one thing in common and that is if they were left untreated, they would cause serious long-term consequences or turn into life threatening conditions.

One commonly treated condition is hydrocephalus, a condition that causes fluid on the brain to build up, leading to increased head size, neurological damage, and even life-threatening complications if left untreated. Surgery to insert a shunt and drain the fluid can relieve the pressure, allowing the child to grow and develop without the challenges posed by this condition.

Burn-related injuries are another common operation we fund. In many areas, open-fire cooking leads to accidents causing severe burns. Without access to adequate treatment, these injuries often heal poorly, leaving debilitating scars and contractures that limit mobility. Humanity Direct funds surgeries to release these contractures, allowing children to regain movement and function.

Additionally, Humanity Direct hernias, and a diverse range of eye issues such as cataracts and severe visual impairments. Many of these conditions are easily treatable in countries with easier access to healthcare, but are often overlooked in low-resource settings. By targeting these specific issues, Humanity Direct enables children to overcome physical limitations, attend school, and participate fully in family and community life.
