How We Prioritise Children for Surgery
Understanding how we prioritise children for surgery is an important part of how Humanity Direct works. With many children needing operations and limited resources in low-income countries, we use a transparent and ethical process to decide which children receive surgery first. Our goal is simple: ensure every donation helps those who need it most, at the moment when surgery will have the biggest impact.

Medical Need Comes First
The first step in how we prioritise children for surgery is assessing medical urgency. Many of the conditions we treat — such as hernias, cataracts, hydroceles or tumours — worsen over time. Our medical partners evaluate each child to determine:
- Whether the condition is life-threatening
- Whether delaying surgery risks long-term complications
- Whether the child is currently in pain or unable to attend school
Urgent cases are always prioritised. This ensures children with the most immediate needs receive help as quickly as possible.
Assessing Long-Term Impact
After medical urgency, we look at how surgery will affect the child’s long-term well-being. Some operations may not be emergencies yet, but they have a life-changing impact. Restoring vision, repairing a hernia or removing a growth can allow a child to return to school, play with friends, or move without pain.
The potential to transform a child’s future is a key part of how we prioritise children for surgery.
Understanding Family Circumstances
Our local team meets each family to understand their situation. Most families we support live below the poverty line and cannot afford even basic healthcare. If paying for medical treatment would push a family further into poverty, their child is prioritised.
No parent should have to choose between feeding their family and saving their child’s life.
Making Every Donation Count
Transparency is central to how we prioritise children for surgery. Every case listed has been medically verified, every cost confirmed, and every donation goes 100% towards that child’s operation. When you choose to help a child, you know exactly why they were prioritised and how your kindness will change their life.
