What is Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a common refractive error caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens. Instead of being perfectly round, the eye’s surface is shaped more like a rugby ball, leading to light being focused unevenly on the retina. This results in blurred or distorted vision at both near and far distances.

Symptoms in Children
- Blurred or fuzzy vision
- Squinting or straining to see clearly
- Headaches, especially after reading or screen time
- Difficulty seeing clearly at night
- Complaints about tired or uncomfortable eyes
Why It Matters
In children, undiagnosed astigmatism can interfere with everyday tasks like reading, writing, or seeing the board at school. It can also affect hand-eye coordination and lead to frustration, poor academic performance, and even amblyopia (lazy eye) if one eye becomes significantly weaker than the other.
Children often don’t realise their vision is impaired—they may simply adapt or avoid tasks that feel difficult. That’s why regular eye screening is so important, particularly in early school years.
Treatment Options
- Prescription glasses with specially shaped cylindrical lenses to correct the uneven focus
- Contact lenses, which can provide clearer vision for more active children or in cases of moderate to severe astigmatism
- Refractive surgery (usually only recommended for adults with stable vision)
How Humanity Direct Helps
For children in low-income communities, basic vision care is often unaffordable or unavailable. Something as simple as a pair of glasses can dramatically improve a child’s quality of life, but many go without. Humanity Direct funds sight-saving treatments, including eye exams, diagnosis, and the provision of corrective lenses.
By directly funding each case, donors help children receive timely care, preventing long-term vision problems and giving them the chance to thrive in school and in life. Clearer vision means greater confidence, better learning, and a brighter future. To donate to Humanity Direct, click here.
