Meet Sylvia, who’s overseen 30,000 eye tests!

Sylvia eye test 2

Meet Sylvia, a key member of the Humanity Direct team who helps run Glasses for Classes.

Since joining Humanity Direct seven years ago, Sylvia has worked tirelessly to help provide over 30,000 children with eye tests.

Sylvia is the first person children meet at our eye clinics. Sylvia oversees the initial eye test using eye charts at two different distances to find out whether students are short sighted (myopia) or long sighted (hyperopia).

Why Sylvia Does Our Eye Tests

Being part of Glasses for Classes means a lot to Sylvia because “it has helped me grow socially, emotionally helping the most vulnerable to have a better life.”

Sylvia told us that what she enjoys the most about her role is knowing that difference that she is making to children’s lives, providing those with the poorest eye sight with glasses so they’ll be able to see their studies and remain in school.

“Seeing children try on glasses for the first time makes me feel happy that I am making a difference in their lives. I feel at peace knowing that I have helped a vulnerable soul who couldn’t afford it but through Glasses for Classes they are able to gain back their sense of seeing in this world.”

For Sylvia, working with Humanity Direct is about making a difference, and through her work with Glasses for Classes Sylvia knows that she’s not just improving vision, she’s opening doors for a brighter future for many children in Uganda.

“These glasses mean a lot to these children because a person who would have ended in lower education due to poor eye sight is able to go further in their studies and fulfil their potential”

Sylvia lives in Mityana District, Uganda with her two children children a boy & a girl. In her spare time she love farming especially growing food to help the vulnerable in her community that need help with food.

In 2025 we’re looking to partner schools in the UK with schools in Uganda, where children need a pair of glasses and eye tests. We’re asking pupils to decorate a pair of paper glasses as creatively as they can, for a £2 donation to help fund our eye tests and glasses.

You can find everything you need to support a Glasses for Classes lesson including a great explanation on what a pair of glasses and eye tests can mean to children in Uganda, letter to parents, glasses templates for decorating and a certificate of participation on our schools resources page.

If your school would like to partner with us and making a difference for children who need it the most, please get in touch at hello@humanitydirect.org
