Betty’s Journey with Glasses for Classes: A Passion for Making a Difference

Meet Betty, a dedicated member of our team at Humanity Direct and a key volunteer making a difference for many years.

Since joining us, Betty has worked tirelessly to deliver over 4000 pairs of glasses through our Glasses for Classes initiative.

Seeing the impact that a pair of glasses has on a child’s life means a lot to Betty. These glasses give children more than just better vision; children who can clearly see what they need to study will have a better academic performance, and are more likely to pass their exams – making a difference that has life long effects. Betty herself has a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and a certificate in Certified Public Accounts.

Betty brings a unique blend of knowledge, passion, and professionalism to her work, as well as a lot of love and warmth, being a mother of five herself.

Betty told us that what she enjoys most about her role is the opportunity to constantly learn new things and apply her knowledge to solve complex problems. Also, working alongside a supportive team in Uganda and internationally, she has seen first-hand the profound impact that proper eye care can have on children’s lives.

“It was pretty nerve-wracking seeing the first child wearing glasses,” Betty recalls, “but as soon as they put them on so many confirmed they could see clearly, and I was so excited to have been part of changing these children’s lives.”

For Betty, working with Humanity Direct is about making a difference, and through her work with Glasses for Classes Betty knows that she’s not just improving vision—she’s opening doors for a brighter future for many children in Uganda. “It means that Humanity Direct is directly reflected in the community, showing a positive impact in the lives of children, especially in the districts we’ve worked in,” she says proudly.

In 2025 we’re looking to partner schools in the UK with schools in Uganda, where children need a pair of glasses. We’re asking pupils to decorate a pair of paper glasses as creatively as they can, for a £2 donation to help fund our eye tests and glasses.

You can find everything you need to support a Glasses for Classes lesson including a great explanation on what a pair of glasses can mean to children in Uganda, letter to parents, glasses templates for decorating and a certificate of participation on our schools resources page.

If your school would like to partner with us and making a difference for children who need it the most, please get in touch at hello@humanitydirect.org.
