There are many different ways you can help give a child the surgery they need. No matter how much you can afford to give, as a one-off donation, through regular giving, or by fundraising, your donation matters and will make an impact. In this blog, we look at the 5 ways to help us fund safe surgery.
What do donations buy?
We fund operations from skin grafts to neurosurgery as well as smaller more routine operations for conditions including, hydrocephalus, hernias, and cataracts – conditions ranked by the World Bank as among the most cost-effective of all health interventions in low-income countries.
The average price of the more routine operations is about £200 while more complex surgery for operations such as tumours or skin grafts can cost several thousand pounds.
Donations fund our rural outreach clinics, essentially putting fuel in our minibus, so our healthcare coordinators can reach areas where children, far from medical care, can be assessed for treatment.
Donations also fund our eye test clinics, allowing us to visit schools, and provide eye tests for students struggling to see their studies so they can get a pair of glasses.
For children who need surgery donations cover every cost of their medical care from the actual surgery to the medical supplies used, hospital stay, post-operative care and transport to and from the hospital.
However you choose to donate you’ll be helping fund medical care for children and we are grateful for every donation received.
How to donate
1. Make a one-off donation
A one-off donation to one of our patients is a great way to fund an operation. You can either fund an entire operation or contribute towards covering the cost of an operation from £5.
This is a great option if you want to donate as and when you want to.

2. Become a regular donor
By giving monthly you’ll be helping us fund operations throughout the year allowing us to plan clinics further in advance knowing that we have the money coming in to fund them.
It also means you know that the donation is set up and you’ve done your bit!

3. Fundraise at one of our events
Our fundraising events, held in partnership with XNRG, have funded hundreds of life-saving and life-changing operations over the years. The popular events are held three times a year in March, July and September.
We try to ensure as many people as possible can participate so we’ve introduced a new 25km distance and the chance to take on the 50km ultra as part of a team.
You can take part for free by fundraising for one of our patients or simply sign up for the event and pay the entrance fee which is then donated to HD.
You can also choose your event. We’ll cover the cost of the entrance fee if you can guarantee to cover the cost of an entire operation!
Check our events page to find out more about our events.
4. Corporate Partnership
Corporate partnerships are a great way of helping charities with financial and technical support. At Humanity Direct we’re really keen to hear from anyone interested in becoming a corporate partner to help us achieve some ambitious projects to help deliver a bigger program of sustainable and safe paediatric surgery. In return you’ll get to help a small charity make an even bigger impact.
If you’re interested in a corporate partnership please email: hello@humanitydirect.org
5. Leaving a Legacy Gift
A legacy gift left to charity is a very personal way to donate to charity. It often reflects your values and beliefs and reminds your loved ones of causes that were important in your life.
It’s also a way of ensuring that the work of a charity can continue after you are gone. As legacy gifts can often be far more substantial than a ‘normal’ donation they can have a huge impact on a charity allowing them to take on a major project that will help the people who rely on it for years to come.
If you’ve been thinking about leaving a legacy gift in your will and would consider leaving something to Humanity Direct please get in contact and we can discuss your wishes.
