Christine has had life saving surgery

We’re delighted to share a successful post-operative update on baby Christine.

We first met Christine a few months ago when she came to one of our clinics with two large growths on the back of her head. The growths were caused by a rare birth defect called occipital encephalocele, which occurs when there is a gap in the bone at the back of the skull. Through this opening, part of the brain, the membranes surrounding it, and fluid can push outwards, forming a sac-like bulge.

Neurosurgeon Dr Ssenyonjo performed the complex operation to return the displaced tissues to their proper positions and close the opening in the skull.  Christine also had hydrocephalus and needed a subsequent operation to remove the fluid from her brain.

Thanks to donations, Christine was able to receive the urgent surgery she needed. Christine is a fighter and we’re so pleased to share that Christine’s surgery was a success.

The growths have been removed and the shunt has taken the pressure off her brain has  giving her the best possible chance for healthy growth and development. She is now recovering well and being closely monitored as she continues to gain strength.
