Karim has made a great recovery after complex surgery

Seven-year-old Karim has spent his childhood struggling with Congenital Equinovarus - commonly known as clubfoot - a condition that twisted both of his feet inward and downward.

Walking was difficult and often painful, and running or playing like other children his age felt impossible. Without treatment, the deformity would have continued to worsen, risking long-term disability and deepening social isolation.

Under the care and expertise of orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Tabana, Karim first underwent a series of gentle manipulations and castings. Although these early steps improved his condition, they weren’t enough to fully correct the deformity. To give Karim the chance to walk confidently and live without pain, surgery became the best and only remaining option.

Thanks to the generosity of Humanity Direct supporters, who took part in our September XNRG ultra, we were able to afford the surgery he needed.

Dr. Tabana successfully performed a soft-tissue release, carefully lengthening the tight tendons and ligaments in Karim’s legs and feet. The operation went smoothly, and Karim's legs were put in a plaster cast, while they recovered.

The moment the plaster casts came off after recovering from surgery.

In the months ahead, he will return for regular follow-ups to monitor his recovery but the hardest part is behind him. For the first time, Karim has the real prospect of standing, walking, running, and playing with his friends.
