At just eight years old, Eram was living with a significant swelling of his lower jaw.
A swelling in the jaw can be caused by a range of conditions, including growths or tumours affecting the bone and surrounding tissues. As these swellings grow, they can alter a child’s face and interfere with important functions such as eating, speaking and normal jaw development. Without treatment, the underlying condition could continue to grow and cause further problems.
Eram needed specialist surgery to remove the swelling.
Maxillofacial surgeons Dr Gonza and Dr Daniel Macho performed an excision, carefully removing the affected tissue from Eram’s lower jaw. Surgery in this area can be particularly complex because the surgeons must work around delicate structures including nerves, blood vessels, teeth and the developing jawbone, while preserving as much healthy tissue and normal function as possible.
For an eight-year-old boy, treating a jaw swelling is especially important. His jaw and face are still developing, and removing the problem gives Eram the best opportunity to heal and continue growing without the ongoing effects of the swelling.
The operation means Eram can look forward to returning to the things that matter to him – going to school, learning, playing with his friends and growing up without the burden of a condition affecting his jaw.
