8-yr-old Hakiram needs hernia surgery. Hernia’s are incredibly common among children in the countries where we work and sadly so are the risks associated with them if they’re left untreated. The major risk is complications such as a strangulated hernia - the symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, and excruciating pain. If this happens emergency surgery is needed but for many families they simply live too far from medical care and won’t be able to reach a hospital that can provide surgical care in time. So we work with our healthcare volunteers and an amazing team of medics to identify children who have large ’at risk’ hernias. By operating we remove the risk, the worry and the financial burden from families who often cannot access the healthcare they desperately need.
