Six-year-old Sharif injured his right eye ending up with a big corneal tear.
It is thought that the sight cannot be saved but he still needs surgery as debris remains in his eye and it is painful. Also by operating it may save the actual eye from having to be removed or further complications if left untreated.
Sharif’s mum took him to the nearest doctor who told her she needed to go to the main hospital in Kampala, 70km from where they live, to get Sharif the treatment he needed. Sharif’s mum is a subsistance farmer, growing just enough food to feed her family so she couldn’t afford to reach the hospital let alone pay for surgery. Sharif’s mum is devastated as since he hurt his eye Sharif hasn’t been able to go to school where his favourite subjects are reading and physical education.
