3-year-old Shakur Kalungi had bilateral cryptorchidism - otherwise known as undescended testis as well as a hernia. Shakur needed to have an orchidopexy - a straightforward operation with a good success rate. During the same operation surgeons also removed the hernia. Without surgery Shakur would have been at greater risk of testicular cancer and fertility problems later in life and the hernia could have resulted in life threatening complications (emergency surgery is needed if hernia’s become incarcerated or strangulated & Shakur’s family would be unlikely to reach such care in time). Donations covered every aspect of his surgery from the transport to and from hospital to the medical supplies used.
