7-year-old Patience is having trouble breathing because of enlarged adenoids. Adenoids can become the size of ping-pong balls and completely block airflow through the nasal passages. Even if enlarged adenoids are not substantial enough to physically block the back of the nose, they can obstruct airflow enough so that breathing through the nose requires an uncomfortable amount of work. In small children the condition can disturb sleep and, if large enough, change the shape of the face. Surgery is the only treatment and this is typical of the low-cost, high impact treatment we fund.
