Little Kimbugwe has an inguinal hernia - where tissue or a part of the bowel, such as the intestine, poke through into the groin. The hernia is large and the swelling is painful. Kimbugwe is a lively little three-year-old but the hernia is preventing him from running around as usual. Serious complications can develop with these hernias. In Uganda hernia’s can be life threatening as not everyone can reach the medical care they need in time when complications set in. Surgeons are therefore keen to operate to remove the hernia as soon as possible. Hernia surgery is ranked as one of the best healthcare interventions in the developing world and a great example of the typical low-cost, high-impact procedures that we fund.
