Weighing in at 1kg baby Ritha weighed the same as a bag of sugar when she was born. Ritha was born premature - the world’s single biggest cause of newborn deaths. As she was so small Ritha was at risk of infection and was struggling to breath because of her underdeveloped lungs and desperately needed special care to keep her alive. Her parents where worried that they couldn’t afford the specialist medical care she needed and doctors thought they might try and leave before she was ready too. Donations covered the cost of placing Ritha in Haydom Hospital’s neonatal unit where she was put under a special heat lamp to keep her warm while she received oxygen and was closely monitored. Ritha eventually reached a healthy weight and was able to be discharged much to the relief of her parents. Thank you to everyone who donated.
