Aliyah was born with congenital hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Her spine hadn’t developed properly and with fluid on the brain Aliyah’s was in a very bad way. Aliyah’s symptoms included paralysis of her lower limbs, bladder and bowel problems, and sensory impairment. There was no treatment for Aliyah where she lives in Somalia so her mother used all her resources to bring her to the Edna Adan Hospital in Somaliland. Thanks to Nicola and Felicity, whose donations covered the costs of her surgery, Aliyah was able to have a shunt inserted that drained the fluid from her brain, alleviating the pressure and reducing the swelling of her head. As she is so young the medical team are confident that Aliyah will make a strong recovery with little physical limitations affecting her future. Thank you Nicola and Felicity from Aliyah and her family, our surgeons at the Edna Adan Foundation and everyone here at Humanity Direct.
